How To Make Cast Iron Bread Rolls

This bread roll recipe is very easy to follow and the bread rolls are super soft, airy, and delicious. Putting glaze-like eggwash and/or garlic butter added tastiness to the bread. I suggest you do not skip the glaze so you do not miss out, ;-P. All of the ingredients for this recipe can be accessed easily from your local grocery store or even online. Let’s learn how to make bread machine cast iron rolls.

Bread Machine Cast Iron Bread Rolls

Ingredients

Glaze:

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 to 2 tbsp drinking water

Garlic butter:

  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 to 2 dashes of garlic powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1 to 2 dashes of parsley
  • 1 to 2 dashes of basil

Items you’ll need

  • Bread machine
  • Cast iron skillet, 12-inch in size
  • Dough cutter
  • Kitchen cloth or towel
  • Kitchen scale (optional)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Oven
  • Spatula

Instructions

Place ingredients in the bread machine:

In the bread machine pan with the fitted kneading paddle, put all of the ingredients as listed on your bread machine’s manufacturer’s instructions. Then place the bread machine back and ensure it is seated properly.

Set the bread machine to dough:

Set the bread machine to “Dough or Pizza Dough” or as listed on your bread machine’s instructions to begin the kneading cycle. 5 or 10 minutes into kneading, it is imperative to check the dough. Scrape the side of the pan and push the ingredients towards the center. Do this 2 to 3 times or until the side of the pan comes out clean and a dough ball is formed. Also, check the dough to make sure it is soft and smooth. Add water and/or flour as needed to prevent a dry or too wet.

Let the dough rise:

When the kneading cycle is complete check the bread machine’s screen to ensure the setting has changed to “Rise” or as per your bread machine’s instructions. In the meantime, lightly flour a flat surface on your countertop. When the rising process is complete, remove the bread machine pan. Lightly flour your hands, punch, and gather the dough. Turn it onto the lightly floured surface. Cover with a kitchen cloth or towel and allow to rest for 10 minutes. While you wait, grease the cast iron skillet with unsalted and set aside.

Place dough in the iron skillet:

After 10 minutes, remove the cover. Divide the dough into 15 equal portions. I chose to use a scale to weigh the dough balls to equal portions (optional), you may or may not use a scale as personal preference. Begin rolling to form a dough ball and place them into the cast iron skillet. You should be able to make 15 dough balls. When done, set the oven to warm and place the cast iron skillet into the oven covered with the kitchen cloth. Allow rising for 40 minutes. If your oven does not have the “Warm” mode, you may put the cast iron skillet in a warm area in your kitchen. After 40 minutes, check the dough and make sure it rose or has doubled the size. Remove the skillet from the oven.

Preheat oven and bake:

Preheat the oven to 375°F/190°C. Place the cast iron skillet into the preheated oven and bake for 18 minutes. 9 minutes into baking, rotate the cast iron skillet doing this will even out the color of the bread rolls.

Make egg wash and glaze:

In the meantime, start making the egg wash and the garlic butter glaze. To make the egg wash, mix 1 egg and 1 to 2 tbsp of drinking water. Mix until well combined and set aside for later use. To make the garlic butter glaze, mix 1 tbsp of unsalted butter, couples dashes of garlic butter, parsley, and basil. Mix until well blended. Then 15 minutes into baking, remove the skillet from the oven. Generously brush the glaze on top. You may use one or the other, or both. Put the skillet back in the oven and continue to bake for 3 more minutes. When done, immediately remove the skillet from the oven. Allow cooling for 10 to 15 minutes before serving. To keep the bread rolls warm, cover them with the kitchen cloth or towel. Enjoy!
